Tokajer
Gaillardia Seeds
Tokajer gaillardia flowers are huge, up to 4 in. across. Petals are mango orange with tips dipped in peach. Blooms are held high on long, strong wiry stems — they are excellent cut flowers.
Flowers are produced in great numbers the first year from July through October. Plants grow to 2-3 ft. tall and are winter hardy to zone 2.
Tokajer gaillardia was a top performer in the S.G.S. test garden. Packet is ½ gram, about 150 seeds.
Growing Tokajer Gaillardia Seeds
Plant Gaillardia Seeds: Sow gaillardia seed in cell packs or flats, press into soil and barely cover. Light aids germination. Kept at 70° F., germination is in 14-21 days. Can direct sow into prepared seed beds, in groups of 3-4 seeds, spaced 12-18 in. apart. Thin seedlings to the strongest plant.
Grow Gaillardia: Plants flower stronger and longer in full sun with moderate water. Gaillardia plants are tough: they are heat and drought tolerant, and rabbit and deer resistant. Gaillardias are first-year flowering perennials, they bloom continuously from late spring or early summer until frost. Gaillardias do not require deadheading to continue to flower; plants will grow fuller and live longer when old blooms are removed. Flowers attract bees and butterflies, are excellent cut flowers. Plants self-sow. Gaillardia is among the easiest to grow perennial flowers.
