Pennisetum alopecuroides var. viridescens
Introduced by the U.S. National Arboretum this is the showiest of the Fountain Grasses. Fuzzy, smoky purple-black plumes are prolifically produced from September to November on compact 2-3 foot plants. They make excellent cut flowers, fresh or dried. This 6-10 foot tall giant is very similar to pampas grass but is hardier. Large, plume-like flower
panicles are produced in late summer. They begin silvery with violet tones and age to white in the
fall. They are outstanding for fresh cut or dried arrangements. The autumn foliage is showy as well,
turning shades of tan, orange, purple and beige. Best used as single specimens in large gardens or as
