Salmon Bright Eyes
Flax Seeds
a.k.a. Flowering Flax, Scarlet Flax
Linum grandiflorum
Pastel salmon-colored flowers with coppery-orange central eyes bloom profusely in summer. Salmon Bright Eyes flax has been grown in cottage gardens since the 1800s. Airy, 1-1.5 ft mounds of slender, wiry stems allow the satiny, cup-shaped blooms to wander and mingle nicely among other annual flowers like snapdragons, love-in-a-mist, Shirley poppies, and bachelor buttons. Salmon Bright Eyes flax is an excellent nectar source for pollinating insects, and also makes a nice seasonal ground cover for spring-blooming bulbs.
Growing Salmon Bright Eyes Flax Seeds
Direct sow flowering flax seeds into prepared seed beds that have been cleared of weeds and have had the top 1 in. of soil loosened. Rake seed in. Press into soil by walking over the area. Keep moist until germination. When kept at 70-75°F, germination is in 14 to 30 days. Can start flowering flax seeds indoors in 2 in. pots; transplant early and gently and do not allow seedlings to become root bound.
