Silky Deep Red
Milkweed Seeds
a.k.a. Tropical Milkweed, Bloodflower
Asclepias curassavica
Silky Deep Red milkweed produces electric red and orange, umbel-type flower heads from summer until frost. It is a tropical milkweed which grows to 3 ft. tall and spreads to 1 ft. wide and makes a stunning, accent or background plant.
Don't confuse Silky Deep Red with the common milkweed, which is not nearly as showy. And yes of course, it is the King of all the plants if you happen to be a butterfly.
Growing Silky Deep Red Milkweed Seeds
Plant Milkweed: Sow seeds in cell packs or flats, press into soil and lightly cover. Kept at 65-75°F, germination is in 14-21 days. Can direct sow into prepared seed beds in groups of 3-4 seeds, spaced 1-2 ft. apart. Thin to the strongest plant.
Grow Milkweed: Milkweeds attract bees and hummingbirds, are important nectar sources for a wide range of pollinators and provide essential nourishment for monarch butterfly larva. Plants are deer and rabbit resistant. Pinch seedlings to encourage more flowering stems per plant. Use caution when working with milkweed: the milky sap is toxic and can cause skin irritation. Caterpillars feeding on milkweed become toxic to birds and other predators.
