Akila Grand Canyon Mix osteospermum is a formulated blend of 2-3 in. daisy-like flowers in shades of cream, lavender, purple, rose-red, white, and yellow. Plants form 18 in. mounds which in most climates bloom from early summer into fall.
Akila Grand Canyon Mix osteospermum can be grown as a perennial in zones 9 and above and in climates with little winter frost flowering can continue well into the cool season.
In the S.G.S. test garden (USDA zone 9) during the winter of 2019, Akila Grand Canyon Mix osteospermum flowered continuously January through March. In fact plants that began blooming in the summer of 2018 remain in bloom as of this writing in late April, 2019. A neat trick indeed.
Growing Akila Grand Canyon Mix Osteospermum
Plant Osteospermum Seeds: Nick seed with nail clippers, then sow in cell packs or flats. Press into soil and barely cover. Kept at 70°F., germination is in 10-21 days. Transplant seedlings into the garden 12-16 in. apart after all danger of frost. Seedlings tolerate light frost, can be set out early in the season.
Grow Osteospermum: Full Sun. Flowers stay open during the day, even during cloudy weather. Deadheading blooms can extend the flowering season. Flowers attract butterflies. Plants resist heat, drought, and deer and withstand coastal conditions. Poor soil is tolerated when drainage is good.
