Sunflower Seeds
Smiley sunflowers are day length neutral, so they do not need the long days of summer to bloom. Wide yellow petals do not curl backwards, and are tightly arranged around the pollen-free, contrasting chocolate brown central discs. When days are short in spring and fall, Smiley blooms at 6-10 in. tall; when days are longer, plants will reach 13-16 in. tall when blooming. Smiley sunflowers typically bloom in about 8 weeks from seed, and thrive in small containers, borders, and in the front of garden beds.
Growing Smiley Sunflower Seeds
Tall Sunflowers: Direct sow into prepared seed beds after all danger of frost. Plant seeds 6 in. apart, ½ in. deep. Thin to 1-1½ ft. apart. Can start plants early indoors in 2 in. pots or cell packs. Transplant into the garden well before seedlings become root bound.
Dwarf Sunflowers: Direct sow into prepared seed beds 3 in. apart, thin to 6-9 in. apart. Easy to start indoors in 2 in. pots or cell packs.
Grow Sunflowers: Sunflowers require full sun. Soil which is moist and moderately fertile will produce the best flower heads. Blooms attract bees, birds and butterflies.
