Four O'Clock Seeds
Each of Marbles Tricolor Four O'Clock's vanilla-scented flowers has three colors: carmine red, pure white, and soft yellow, splashed in varied patterns across the trumpet-shaped bloom. Vigorous, bushy, 2-3 ft. tall plants bloom freely from midsummer to frost, opening in the late afternoon and remain open throughout the night to the benefit of nocturnal pollinators. Marbles Tricolor Four O'Clocks are first-year flowering perennials, winter hardy to zone 8. They may be grown as annuals in any zone. Packet is 3 grams, about 25 seeds.
Growing Marbles Tricolor Four O'Clock Seeds
Plant Four O'Clock Seeds: To speed four o'clock seed germination, nick the pointed end of the seed with a nail clipper or sharp knife, then soak seed in warm water for 4-6 hours prior to sowing. Direct sow into prepared seed beds in groups of 3-4 seeds spaced 18-24 in. apart. Thin to the strongest plant.
Grow Four O'Clock: Full or part sun. Any soil with good drainage. Better bloom with moderate to regular water. Forms black, carrot-like roots. In zones 7 and below tuberous roots can be dug after the first fall frost and stored in a dry, dark location like dahlias. Flowers attract butterflies, spectacular moths, and hummingbirds. Plants resist drought, rabbits and deer. Flowers are fragrant, open in response to temperature. As the day becomes cooler, flowers open and will remain open until the next morning.
