How to Plant and Grow Prairie Blues Little Bluestem

Plant Prairie Blues Little Bluestem Seeds: Sow seed in cell packs or flats, press into soil — do not cover. Needs light to germinate. Keep soil evenly moist. Kept near 68° F., emergence is in 21 to 28 days. Can be direct sown in groups of 3 seeds, spaced 18 to 36 inches apart. Thinning is not required.

Grow Prairie Blues Little Bluestem: Full sun. Average to little water. Prairie Blues Little Bluestem will grow in almost any soil. Easy to grow plants tolerate poor soil, heavy clay soil, drought, high heat, and humidity. Use Prairie Blues Little Bluestem in groups in mixed borders, cottage gardens and rock gardens, or mass to create a soothing, showy meadow or prairie-like effect. Cut plants back to within 6 inches of the ground in late winter to make room for spring growth.

Dig Deeper: Fluffy, silvery seed heads attract birds and add interest to cut flower arrangements. Foliage attracts butterflies. Soft looking, pewter blue foliage looks great most of the year and the bronze to salmon orange fall color is outstanding. Deep, well-developed root system and wide adaptation make Prairie Blues Little Bluestem an excellent choice for erosion control in difficult locations such as exposed slopes, hillsides and ridges. Even grows well near black walnut trees. Prairie Blues Little Bluestem grows beautifully with Giant Hyssop, Pink Muhlygrass, Purple coneflower, and Yarrow.
