In late spring and into summer, Showy milkweed blooms in rounded clusters of large, star-shaped, waxy white and pink flowers which are sweetly fragrant and irresistible to butterflies. Tall, 2-4 ft. (sometimes up to 6 ft.) upright, unbranched stems with large silvery-green leaves grow in steadily expanding groups. Stems, leaves, flower buds, and the large, later-to-develop seed pods, are all heavily felted with soft white hairs. Flowers provide nectar for butterflies, hummingbirds, and many other pollinators. Emerging Monarch butterfly larvae (caterpillars) feed on the foliage. Showy milkweed is native to Western North America, and winter hardy to zone 3.
How to Plant and Grow Showy Milkweed
Plant Showy Milkweed Seeds: Sow Showy milkweed seeds in 2 in. pots, press into soil and lightly cover. Kept at 65-70°F., germination is in 10-21 days. Transplant seedlings into the garden 12-18 in. apart, well before seedlings become root bound.
Grow Showy Milkweed: Showy milkweed tolerates heat and drought, needs only occasional water once established, and will happily accept average moisture with good drainage.
MIlkweeds attract bees and hummingbirds, are important nectar sources for a wide range of pollinators and provide essential nourishment for monarch butterfly larva. Plants are deer and rabbit resistant.
