Verbena bonariensis
Fleuroselect Gold Medal Winner and AAS Ornamental Winner. Vanity verbena is a compact-growing selection of Verbena bonariensis; just 2-3 ft. tall in bloom. Airy, multi-branched flower spikes are made of 1-1½ in. clusters of tiny, intense violet purple florets, and are spectacular fillers for fresh cut bouquets. Butterflies, bees, and many other pollinating insects will delight in the nectar-rich blooms from mid summer to frost. Vanity verbena grows beautifully in garden borders, 12 in. or larger containers, or in front of Purple Top verbena. Heat and drought tolerant plants bloom the first year when started early, are winter hardy to zone 7, and may be grown as an annual anywhere.
Growing Vanity Verbena Seeds
Plant Verbena Seeds: Sow verbena seeds in 2 in. pots or cell packs, press into soil and barely cover. Needs darkness to germinate. Kept at 70° F., germination occurs within 4 weeks. Transplant seedlings into the garden 24 in. apart. Pinch back Verbena bonariensis seedlings at planting time to encourage bushiness.
Grow Verbena: Full sun. Plants tolerate heat and drought and are deer and rabbit resistant. Flowers attract hummingbird moths and hummingbirds. They rival butterfly bush flowers with their ability to attract butterflies, and verbenas will flower much longer, with lower maintenance.
