Winner of the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Defender hybrid zucchini was bred in Great Britain, where summer squashes are called courgettes. Compact, 36 in. wide plants have an open growth habit which makes the straight, medium green, deliciously tender fruits easy to pick. A strong defense against mildew and viruses results in a long, productive harvest season, typically from early July to October. Defender grows well in large patio containers and raised beds, also directly in the garden.
Growing Defender Summer Squash Seeds
Direct sow when soil is at least 70°F., and weather has settled. Seeds will not germinate in cold soils. Sow 3 seeds per foot, cover about 1 inch in rows 3-4 feet apart. Thin to 1 foot apart. Can start squash seeds indoors in cell packs 3-4 weeks before the last frost.
