Splash Select Red polka dot plant is a heat and humidity tolerant tropical foliage plant that can be grown as a houseplant or as a summer annual outdoors in shade or semi-shade. Dark green, elongated heart-shaped leaves are splashed and dotted in bright red. Low, mounding plants grow 6-12 in. tall and 12-14 in. wide. Regular tip pruning can keep them at about 6 in. tall. Wiry spikes of tiny purple flowers are insignificant and are easily removed for a tidier appearance, or some may be left on the plant to self sow if desired. Splash Red polka dot plants are wonderful for a small-scale seasonal ground cover, for adding pizzazz to mixed planters, or for edging a shady garden bed. When used as houseplants, they grow best in a bright, diffused light.
Growing Splash Select Red Polka Dot Plant Seeds
Sow polka dot plant seeds in cell packs or flats, use a sterilized soilless mix. Press seeds into soil, lightly cover. Kept at 70-75°F., seeds germinate in about 5-10 days. The first leaves to emerge will be green; the red variegation will begin to appear in the following sets of leaves. Keep soil consistently wet until germination, then keep seedlings slightly moist. Transplant into the garden 10-12 in. apart. A small percentage of seedlings may be off-type.
