Saponaria ocymoides
Trailing growth to 8-12 in. tall and 3 ft. across. Delightful, rose pink, phlox-like flowers are held in loose sprays. Blooms cover the plants in May and June. Soapwort is a terrific ground cover, or allow plants spill over the side of raised beds. Needs good drainage. Winter hardy to zone 2. Packet is 1 gram, about 450 seeds.
Growing Soapwort Saponaria Seeds
Sow seed in 2 in. pots or cell packs, press into soil and lightly cover. Kept at 65° F., germination is in 15-25 days. Can direct sow into prepared seed beds in groups of 6 seeds spaced 18 in. apart. Thin to the strongest plant.
