Victorian Laced
Primrose Seeds
Primula x polyantha
Victorian Laced is a group of classic primroses introduced in the 17th century. They still fascinate us today. These primroses feature masses of gorgeous red, maroon, purple, or brown-black flowers on 2-3 in. stems. Blooms feature prominent golden eyes, elegantly edged in gold or silver-white. Victorian Laced primroses are longer-lived than modern hybrids. Plants form showy mats of flowers up to 3 ft. across.
Growing Victorian Laced Primrose Seeds
Plant Primrose: Sow primrose seeds in cell packs or flats, press into soil but do not cover. Need light to germinate. Kept at 60-65° F., germination is in 21-30 days. Transplant seedlings 8-12 in. apart when first anchor roots appear at the base of the plants, just above the soil line. Direct sowing primrose seed is not recommended.
Grow Primrose: Part sun in most climates, full sun in coolest areas. Likes moist, rich, well-drained soil and regular fertilizer. Superb in containers. Taller primroses are excellent for cutting.
