Compact 6 inch tall plants thrive in cooler weather and can be grown the same way as pansies. They produce huge quantities of large, 2 inch, quilled, double flowers from early spring to early summer. Colors include red, rose, white with red tips, and white. Often self-sows.
They are terrific in containers or planted with spring bulbs or at the front of borders. Prefers part shade and regular moisture. Winter hardy to zone 3; Perennial in cooler climates and biennial in warmer areas.
